prototype-led ideation for a freight security platform

The brief

A platform for viewing, reporting and actioning of incidents.

Requirements and technology

For security of the freight, each truck has a tracker/sensor embedded into the lock mechanism of the rear cargo doors - which senses driving behaviour (such as harsh cornering) and more importantly prevents the unlocking of the truck’s cargo doors outside a defined geofence.

Agents in an operations centre monitor each truck, remotely lock and unlock the doors for drivers at geofence destinations and action prioritised alerts such as highjackings and medical emergencies displayed in the form of tickets.

Iterations and scenarios

Each prototype iteration would raise questions and new scenarios to be considered and factored into the next.

For example, besides a prioritised ticket view the team felt that agents would find a map view and a list view beneficial.

When considering the prototype of the expanded highjack location modal the team identified a scenario in which the truck and trailor could be separated and this feature was incorporated into the next prototype.

A driver app would need to be developed to communicate unlocking requests and alert agents to highjackings. An addition was a short predefined list of quick messages. Importantly it was decided that the app contain the barest minimum of functionalities for simplicity.

Of course data input into an admin system would be required - for example, managing truck fleets, assigning operator and supervisor rights and setting up geofences.
